Family Sessions
What to wear!
All of my clients have access to a service called Style and Select (Style&Select) Style and Select will help you decide how to coordinate your family's outfits, and you can order your outfits directly through the site (or use the "looks" they create to guide you when you shop local)! Outfits aren't everything, but they are pretty close to everything! If you are planning to hang your session images in your home, you want the colors to complement and coordinate with the decor of your home.
If you don't plan to order new ones for your session, here are some styling pointers:
The goal is to coordinate, not match. There are a few times matching is great (think, "mommy and me" matching floral dresses, or both big brothers wearing suspenders and khakis) but generally, follow these rules of thumb:
Coordinate, don't match
1 or 2 patterns max
Add textures and accessories (sweaters, jewelry, layers etc.)
Build the rest of the outfits off of a floral pattern you have for mom's dress, or a plaid Dad is wearing. When I plan my family's outfits, I usually find a dress that I love for me and/or my daughter, then I pick coordinating pieces that compliment our outfits for the boys. If I were to buy a cream dress with rust and sage florals, I'd buy my husband a tan plaid, Jude a rust sweater, Owen a cream colored Henley, Lyla either a dress that matches mine, or a flowy sage dress to match my flowers.
It's ok to have color, but stay away from primary colors like fire engine red, royal blue etc. Instead, pick the more muted tones of these colors! Like rust rather than red, or navy rather than blue.
Stay away from fluorescent colors like fuchsia and lime green! They actually cast color back onto the neck and chin of the person wearing them, which is fine for every day life, but doesn't translate well into a photograph!
Happy Vibes Oh, so welcome!
I realize preparing for a family session can be exceptionally stressful. I have hoped to remove a bit of that stress with the Style and Select styling service. However, I realize that clothes aren't all that stress a mama out on photoshoot day. Everyone wants what I lovingly call the "grandma photo" (because that's the picture Grandma wants on. her fridge), when everyone looks and smiles happily and authentically directly into the center of my camera lens. However, the most authentic and happy your kiddos will be, is when they are interacting and playing with you. I always start with the "grandma picture", and more formal portraits, but the pictures I've grown to cherish most of my family are the ones where we are interacting and at play. The smile my daughter gives when I'm dancing with her, is much better than the smile she gives when I tell her to "say cheese." So if you look over and your children is sticking their tongue out at me, it is probably because I told them to make a silly face. These pictures might not be the ones you hang, but they are helping your kiddo loosen up and get comfortable with me and my camera.
I've also found it is more effective to redirect, or change up our location a bit if a child is struggling or having a meltdown, rather than disciplining more harshly. I joke often that photoshoots are the only place that bribery is a perfectly acceptable and appreciated parenting tactic (just save the chocolate and skittles for later so we don't stain their clothes mid session).
Also, PLEASE do not worry about what I think about the quality of parenting you bring to the table, or your children's photoshoot behavior! I have seen everything over the years, including my own kids coming unraveled! So, I won't judge your kids or your parenting if you don't judge mine (haha).
Locations
The Children's Industrial Home
~
This beautiful spot is located at 4690 N. Mumford Road, Macon Georgia.
It features a pond with an old dock, a field with a wall of evergreens filtering the sunlight, and rolling hills with wild, tall grass (there are little footpaths cut for safe walking).
The Industrial District
~
I have a couple of favorite little areas in the Industrial District, just past downtown Macon. Think, old brick, loading docks, faded vintage murals, arched tunnel, and old windows.
Charlie's Farm
~
I have access to a private farm in Warner Robins, and it is one of my favorite spot. It is always changing with the seasons, and offers at times a hay field, dirt road, old metal silos, long needle pine trees, and lots of pretty light!
